Pedagogical University - Thai Nguyen University, formerly known as Viet Bac Pedagogical University, was established on July 18, 1966 under the Government's Decision No. 127 / CP. In 1994, the Government established Thai Nguyen University, Viet Bac University of Education became a member higher education institution of Thai Nguyen University, with the new name of University of Education - Thai Nguyen University (DHSP - TNU). Over 50 years of construction and development, the University of Pedagogy - TNU has always been consistent with the mission: to be a training and retraining institution for high-quality teachers and educational managers; It is a center of scientific and technological research and application, serving the cause of education - training, socio-economic development of the whole country, especially the Northern Midland and Mountain region.

The faculty of the University is growing, meeting well the current requirements of educational innovation. As of December 2016, the University has 562 officials and lecturers. Of the 386 lecturers, 34 have the title of Professor, Associate Professor, 154 lecturers have doctoral degree (accounting for nearly 40%) and 75 lecturers are studying postgraduate students at home and abroad.  In the early days of its establishment, the University was only a high school teacher training facility for children of ethnic minorities in the Northern mountainous region with 07 majors, up to now, the University of Pedagogy has confirmed its position. located in the system of pedagogical universities nationwide. School officials participated in dozens of key State level scientific research projects; carried out hundreds of ministerial and university level scientific research projects. Officials and lecturers of the University have published hundreds of prestigious international journal articles in ISI system. Along with the scientific research activities of lecturers, the scientific research activities of the students are always invested by the University. Every year, the university's students win high rankings in the national scientific student awards.

Regarding international cooperation, the University has cooperative relations with many universities and international organizations in the world such as Japan, the United States, Germany, Australia, the Netherlands, New Zealand, South Korea, Belgium and Thailand. , China, Taiwan, Laos, Cambodia.
